What Are The Most Common Alternative Therapies?

What is alternative medicine? Alternative medicine is the practice of using treatments more familiar in the Eastern World than the Western world. Conventional medicine is focused more on immediate cures through medications, shots and surgeries, whereas alternative medicine focuses primarily on long term solutions to curing ailments through natural cures. There is also a term called complementary medicine. This is a combination of Western medicine coupled with alternative medicine.

Thanks to the internet, the practice of alternative medicine is on the rise. With new findings and new studies only a click away, advances are being made every day. Researchers are now able to share what they’ve learned with others quickly and effectively, thus bringing about a new age of medicine. As more and more people become upset with their current sick-care specialists, people are now turning to health food stores, acupuncturists, and other alternative therapies.

The most common forms of alternative medicine are:

Acupuncture
Homeopathy
Naturopathic medicine
Osteopathy

Acupuncture: This ancient art originated in the Orient. Acupuncturists place and manipulate needles in certain areas of the body to create a wanted effect. Through acupuncture individuals experience a sense of well being and overall health. There are several forms of acupuncture which are taught worldwide.

Homeopathy: Is a form of medicine that tries to stimulate the body’s immune system in order to promote healing. Through homeopathy, the body is brought back to a state of balance and well being.

Naturopathic medicine: Through the use of multiple forms of alternative medicine, individuals are able to bring their body back to a more natural state through the use of exercise, nutrition, supplements, and vitamins. The body is brought back to it’s normal state through targeted nutritional therapy, thus allowing the body to heal itself.

Osteopathy: Focuses on joint manipulation. It is still used today for cronic back pain sufferers and is practiced with other forms of medicine.

The latest entry to the alternative medicine world is chelation therapy. Chelation focuses on removing heavy metals from the body that cannot free themselves on their own. The body produces these metals on its own for normal bodily functions, but the outside world is now introducing many of these same metals into our bodies at a rate higher than the body can remove them. These metals are found in our drinking water, food, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies. Elements known as chelators are used to bond with these heavy metals, making them water soluble so they may be flushed from the body.

While some alternative treatments have been practiced for centuries, their popularity in the United States is still in its infancy. More and more books are being written on the subject every day, businesses are switching over to more “eco safe” materials and the world as a whole is becoming more aware of what we are putting into our bodies. As this knowledge continues to spread, the practice of alternative medicine continues to grow, and more people are turning to these alternative treatments to help with their overall health.

Alternative to Meds Center is on the forefront of the alternative mental health revolution.
